Piller Power Systems, a global leader in power protection solutions, strengthens the power infrastructure for Odense University Hospital (OUH), Denmark’s largest newly constructed hospital. The 10.8 MW OUH spans 500,000m2, with the hospital buildings covering nearly 250,000m2 and 855 beds. Handover of the 10,000-room facility is anticipated in 2025.
The 12.6 MW UPS system, featuring 7 Piller UNIBLOCK UBTD+ 1800 units with PB21 flywheel energy storage, ensures seamless power ride-through at a nominal voltage of 10,000 V / 50 Hz. Housed in a centralised building, the system is backed by seven high-performance, emission-optimised diesel engines.
Piller’s engagement in the OUH project, secured through an EU-public tender led by Coromatic A/S, demonstrates significant energy and fuel cost savings exceeding €10 million over 25 years. With a 1.8 million-hour mean time between failure (MTBF), the Piller system ensures maximum uptime and reduced unplanned interventions for critical hospital operations.
Beyond economic benefits, the Piller system aligns with sustainability goals, projecting substantial CO2 emission savings over 25 years. OUH aims to derive at least 20% of its energy from renewable sources, supported by a 25,000 square metre photovoltaic system generating 4,500 MWh annually.
The significance of power at scale for OUH is evident in its Radiology and Nuclear Medicine capacity, with 22 MRI scanners, CT scanners, and other diagnostic equipment. The Piller system, a performance-tested technology, assures design reliability, maintenance and production control under the manufacturer’s responsibility, avoiding reliance on disparate parts from multiple suppliers.
