Skanska, in a consortium with the UK investment fund Innisfree, has been chosen to develop and construct the new university hospital, New Karolinska Solna (NKS), in Sweden. The contract includes fully integrated hard and soft facilities management services throughout the concession period. The New Karolinska Solna is the first project in health and medical care in Sweden to be conducted as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Skanska and Innisfree will be responsible for financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the new hospital until 2040. The construction contract amounts to approximately SEK 14.5 billion.
The New Karolinska Solna will be Sweden’s leading University hospital and a world-class leader, at the center of one of the world’s major areas of life science. It will set a new standard for safety, quality, efficiency and patient experience.
At the same time the New Karolinska Solna will be the world’s most environmentally friendly University hospital. As health care facilities electricity consumption traditionally takes up half the hospital’s total energy requirement, energy-efficient equipment is a priority and it will be built and operated with the lowest environmental impact to date in new hospital construction.
Some key facts about the new hospital:
The New Karolinska Solna project is an enormous construction project, which was started in the summer of 2010 and will continue until the autumn of 2017. The new hospital facilities will consist of approximately 320 000 square meters total gross area.
Approximately 6000 employees and about 1000 scientists and students will work on site.
35 operating rooms, eight radiation bunkers and 180 reception rooms and rooms for imaging and functional diagnostics will be provided.
The opening of the hospital and the start of the first medical care operations are envisaged for 2016.
The aspiration of the NKS is to have as near a zero-impact rating regarding greenhouse gas pollution as reasonably possible. Even the backup power Diesel rotary uninterruptible power supplies for both heating and electricity share this requirement and goal.
Skanska selected Piller to provide the central uninterruptible power supply for the hospital. Piller will supply and install ten rotary Diesel UPS UNIBLOCK UBTD 2500 with kinetic energy storages in two rings with ISO-parallel configuration.
