Like all advanced economies Spain is tackling the challenges of energy transition to decarbonise power supply in a time of mass electrification of everything from transport to manufacturing.
If it is to meet the surging demand for digital infrastructure one industry that must rapidly ensure access to clean power capacity is the data centre sector.
The figures of the growing number of data centre facilities being planned in Spain and across LATAM tell the story. With a rapid increase in data centre operator and hyperscaler deployments, Spain’s data centre market is projected to grow from $3.81 billion in 2022 to $5.28 billion by 2028 as reported by Statista. The Latin America data center market size was valued at US$5.51 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach US$8.81 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 8.14% reported arizton.
Like all energy intensive sectors data centres welcome developments in traditional grid modernisation, and growth in renewable energy generation capacity energy.
But data centre developers are also aware they must look to local power generation and Microgrids if they are to guarantee access to clean power to match the scale of the requirement.
