As demand from AI gathers pace, every data center operator is asking the same question:
“Where will the power come from?”

Keith Maclean-Martin, Technical Director at Piller UK, talking to Data Center Dynamics’ Stephen Worn, outlines an innovative power solution that eliminates UPS, batteries and back-up generators entirely.

By 2026 the global power demand from data centers is expected to exceed 1000 TwHs – more than doubling since 2022.

Across the world operators are increasingly finding grid connections the single biggest challenge to meet burgeoning demand.

In some places securing a 100MW grid connection can mean a ten-year wait. Clearly not an option when demand is now.

Scale, load characteristics and volatility are  shaping demand for new and novel solutions to secure power and stable delivery of that power.

The Power of 10 Microgrid Solution

Piller Power Systems, together with Power Solutions sister companies Bergen Engines (formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines) in Norway and Italy’s Marelli Motori, have come together to meet the challenge.

The result is The Power of 10, a modular microgrid power solution comprising multiples of 10MW Bergen / Marelli generator sets from 30MW to 300MW and beyond, outputting to Piller Integrated Power Conditioning & Switching (IPCS) technology. Power is delivered straight to the server floors. No conventional UPS. No batteries. No backup generators.

The Power of 10, a modular microgrid power solution for data centers that eliminates conventional UPS, batteries and backup generators.

With this technology primary power can be localized in the microgrid, bringing the power supply totally under the control of the data center operator.

For new build facilities where available grid connection is in question, The Power of 10 is a long term sustainable alternative that can also be integrated with renewables.

AI is changing how data centers will be powered. Primary on site baseload power protected from fault impact protects investment and provides access, delivery and secures sustainable power.
