Piller USA to protect NYC 911 emergency services for another 20 years!

Piller Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Control Systems have been the heart of NYC 911 Power protection for over 20 years, ensuring emergency services response in the five boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

This is set to continue. In a competitive tender Piller USA was awarded the contract to modernize and future proof the power infrastructure of the NYC Emergency Dispatch Telephone centre.

Based in Brooklyn, the building is the primary 911 Emergency Dispatch Centre of the NYPD & FDNY and the Emergency Medical Dispatch (911) Emergency call centre. It runs together with the NYC – Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DoITT).

After 20 years of reliable operation the original Piller power protection equipment reached its natural end of life. The upgrade project called for the modernisation of the underlying infrastructure and the secure migration from existing systems while ensuring continuous operation.

In the 20 years since it specified, installed, commissioned and managed the power infrastructure to support NYC’s emergency operations Piller has worked closely with FM partner Brookfield Properties and the end customer.

In that time Piller kept the power on even in times of national and citywide emergencies such as the 2012 Hurricane Sandy storm surge which flooded New York streets, tunnels and subways.

While the flooding caused many buildings to lose power Piller helped keep the Emergency services operating thanks to its to its intimate knowledge of the full power chain, the building layout, its maintenance expertise and its own emergency response.

Modernisation

For the migration and modernisation project a key objective was operational continuity of the power chain while benefiting from greater efficiency, higher reliability and availability provided by Piller technologies.

The modernised infrastructure included a phased delivery of over 5MW of new power protection capability through 8 EC UBT+ 675 Battery UPS Modules alongside an upgrade of the existing Control Systems including operational migration.

This was delivered through the professional engineering and consultation, maintenance and service expertise unique to Piller including the provision of a new control system which manages the entire power chain.

Building on its close customer and partnership relationships Piller’s is set to provide another twenty plus years of ensured protection to the NYC 911 emergency response services.

Nothing protects quite like Piller.
